Where are you from, and what have you studied, and at which institution?
I am from Chongqing, China. From July 2023 to July 2025, I studied at TAFE SA, where I completed a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology, a Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis, and a Diploma of Automotive Technology.
Before coming to Australia, I completed a bachelor’s degree in Financial Management back home in China.
What has your timeline in Adelaide looked like?
I arrived in Adelaide in February 2023. It was my first time living overseas, and everything felt new and exciting. From July 2023 to July 2024, I studied the Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology. Then, from July 2024 to January 2025, I continued with the Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis, and from January to July 2025, I completed my Diploma of Automotive Technology.
In October 2024, while I was still studying, I started a casual job at Wayville Hyundai. This gave me a great chance to apply what I’d learned in class to real cars and build my practical skills. After graduating in July 2025, I was fortunate to stay on and continue working with Wayville Hyundai as a full-time technician.
Looking back, my time in Adelaide has been very rewarding. I’ve gained a professional skill that allows me to build a career, grown more confident and independent, met amazing classmates, teachers, and friends, and really enjoyed the relaxed lifestyle here.
What motivated you to choose Adelaide over other Australian cities for your studies?
I chose Adelaide because it is known as one of the most liveable cities in Australia, and I really like the idea of the “30-minute city,” where everything is close and convenient. I enjoy the calm and not-too-busy lifestyle here, and the weather is very pleasant.
After doing some research, I also found that Adelaide offers plenty of job opportunities, a great learning environment, and a safe community for students. The education system here has an excellent reputation, which made me confident about choosing Adelaide as my study destination.
How did you select your course and institution, and what resources or support services have you found most helpful at your institution?
When I was choosing where to study, my priority was to find a reliable public institution with high-quality education. After looking into the courses available in Adelaide, I discovered my strong interest in automotive studies. I also liked that the study pathway was well structured, allowing me to progress step by step and build my skills gradually.
During my time in Adelaide, the support I received made a huge difference. My teachers have been very experienced and patient, always combining theory with hands-on training. Career guidance sessions and industry connections also played a big role through those opportunities.
I’ve also found the student services here really helpful, from international student advisors to study support. These services made me feel supported both academically and personally, and gave me confidence as an international student living overseas.
Describe a moment when you felt truly at home in Adelaide.
One moment that really made me feel at home in Adelaide was my classmates, teachers, and colleagues, who have always been so supportive and caring. Whenever I faced challenges, they were willing to help and encourage me. Even though I am far away from home, I felt touched knowing that there are people here who look out for me. Their kindness made me feel that Adelaide is not just a place to study and work, but also a place where I truly belong.
If you were to take a friend on a day trip around Adelaide, where would you take them and why?
If I were to take a friend on a day trip around Adelaide, I would start the morning with a visit to the Barossa Valley to enjoy some of South Australia’s world-famous wineries. In the afternoon, I’d head to Hahndorf, the historic German village, where we could walk around the streets, enjoy coffee, and explore the local shops.
For the evening, I would take them to Hallett Cove to watch the sunset by the ocean; it’s such a peaceful and beautiful spot. To finish the day, we would then go to Chinatown in the city to enjoy the lively atmosphere and delicious food, which would give my friend a real taste of Adelaide’s vibrant nightlife.
Where do you currently work, and what are your future aspirations?
I currently work at Wayville Hyundai. I first joined the team in October 2024 as a casual employee while I was still studying, and after graduating in July 2025, I was very fortunate to continue with the company as a full-time technician.
Looking ahead, I hope to keep growing my skills and experience in Adelaide’s automotive industry. My goal is to become a senior or master technician in the future.
Adelaide has given me so many opportunities, from study to work, and I see it as the place where I want to build both my career and my life.
