Where are you from, and what have you studied and at which institution?

I'm from China, and I completed my Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and a Master of Design (Digital Media) rom The University of Adelaide, which in 2026 will combine with the University of South Australia to become Adelaide University.

What motivated you to choose Adelaide over other Australian cities for your studies?

I came to Australia when I was 15 on my own. After some challenging experiences in Brisbane, Adelaide became my final destination, and it turned out to be the perfect fit.

The truth is, Adelaide's smaller population and fewer distractions were exactly what I needed. Coming from a busy place like Hong Kong, cities like Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne offered too many similarities to home, with busy streets, endless entertainment and constant stimulation. My mother specifically wanted me in a place that was simpler and more conducive to focusing on studies.

Adelaide offered quality education without the distractions of bigger cities. Its more manageable size and calmer pace created an environment where I could concentrate on learning rather than being pulled in multiple directions.

What are some of your favourite things to do in Adelaide?

I enjoy playing basketball and have recently started playing golf. Adelaide's climate means you can enjoy outdoor activities year-round, which is quite different from Hong Kong's humidity. The nearby wine regions like Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale make weekend trips easy.

I also enjoy exploring the food scene, particularly in Chinatown and the Central Market. Coming from Hong Kong, food is an important part of my culture, and Adelaide offers diverse food experiences at better prices than larger cities.

What I love about Adelaide is that you can be in meetings in the city in the morning, and then at the beach or out hiking in the hills by the afternoon. That kind of easy access to nature makes it a lot easier for me to stay balanced and avoid burnout.
